In brief

  1. 1Exits ran at 1,673 cars a day over 6 recorded days, up 5.8% on the 7 days before (1,580 a day over 7 recorded), at least 7,758 of them with the seller's own proof of sale.
  2. 2Dealers cut 20,258 cars' prices against 3,350 rises: 2.10 cuts a day per 100 cars live, up 9.7% on the 7 days before; the median cut was $1,000.
  3. 3The median used asking price closed at $28,490 over 106,884 cars; the used rule changed on 8 Oct, so it is not compared with the 7 days before.
  4. 4Electric cars were 4.4% of the used stock at the close and 3.1% of the used cars that left, +0.3 pts on the 7 days before. Plug-in hybrids were 0.9% of the stock, median build 2025 and 6,252 km: near-new cars.
  5. 5Electric cars were 2.8% of the panel's used exits in the week of 28 Sept (2.8% over every site watched, the difference being coverage), from 2.2% in the week of 17 Aug; hybrids 8.4% from 7.5%: 7 weeks on the same sources.
  6. 6Ford Ranger led the market out with 1,060 proved exits, down 14.7% per recorded day; Chery Tiggo 4 rose fastest among the twelve, up 35.8% per recorded day.

Computed from the figures below, each with its count; nothing is a forecast.

Series breaks inside this period

2026-10-08 · used rule changed
From 08 Oct 2026 the daily roll-ups count used cars by the one rule, not marked new and 1,000 km or more where the odometer is known, instead of the used label alone. On the snapshot of 07 Oct 2026 the label counted 100,538 cars standing and the rule 106,753, a step of +6,215; every used-stock level, used ask and used-km figure in the roll-ups steps with it. No earlier day is rewritten. Demos past the floor and cars of unstated condition come in; labelled-used cars under 1,000 km go out.

2026-10-09 · daily car counts recounted whole
On 9 October 2026 every day from 11 August was recounted over the whole UTC day. Until then each day's cars that left, cars proved sold and cars cut or raised were counted at 12:50 UTC and never finished, so the afternoon crawl was missing: about a third of exits since September. Reports issued before 12 October compared those part-day counts and keep them as issued; from this issue both windows of every comparison are whole days.

Read the day-by-day table across a step as two series rather than one; a level is not compared across it. Nothing has been smoothed.

Electric cars were 4.4% of the used stock at the close and 3.1% of the used cars that left, +0.3 pts on the 7 days before. Plug-in hybrids were 0.9% of the stock, median build 2025 and 6,252 km: near-new cars.

Used cars standing on the last recorded day (2026-10-10) and the period's used cars that left, by the powertrain the listing stated. Shares are of the 102,545 standing and 5,982 leaving cars with one; the standing share's change is against the close of the 7 days before, whole watched corpus, the leaving share's against the same period, whole corpus. Prices: the market and waiting cars

The median ask by state is not compared with the 7 days before: the used rule changed on 8 Oct (+6,215 cars counted as used), so the two closes count used cars differently.

Days to sell and stock

Days of stock are counted when the week closes: a running week’s exits are still being confirmed, so its pace runs slow.

How long the period’s sales had been advertised

5,801 used and demo cars proved sold in the period, of which 4,562 publish the seller’s own listing date and are what this is measured over; the median is 27 days. Unproved exits are excluded: a page that went quiet is not a sale, and a days-to-sell figure built from both would be measuring two different things.

The detail

Against the period before

Against the 7 days before, 28 Sept to 4 Oct: 6 of 7 days recorded this period against 7 of 7 before, so flows are compared per recorded day. Flows are summed over recorded days, levels read on the last; a comparison the windows cannot bear is left blank with its reason.

Day by day6 days

Cars and advertisements separately wherever both exist; they differ by about half again. Every day due in this period recorded. 1 day is still to be written: 2026-10-11. The daily roll-up runs at 12:50 UTC, so today appears here until it does.

One row per recorded day from 2026-10-05 to 2026-10-11, 6 days recorded: listings and cars live, exits in advertisements and in cars with the proved share, their value in dollars at final asking prices, and cuts and rises as events and as cars. Cars proved sold: cars whose exit the seller's own page proved: its SOLD text, or a 404/410. All exits: cars that left, recounted on 2026-09-03 against the live listings of that day, the wider figure and the one to read with care: it was recounted after the period closed, so a car that has since been re-advertised has left it. Cars cut: cars repriced down, one per car per day. A dash is a day recorded before these columns existed, not a zero.

By state9 states

Levels are the last recorded day; flows are the period’s total. A state gaining watched cars may just be gaining yards.

By state, 9 states, 2026-10-05 to 2026-10-11: cars watched and their median ask in dollars as advertised on the last recorded day, then cars proved sold and cars cut over the whole period. Levels and flows are different quantities.

“over” is the cars whose price the median was taken across, which is fewer than the cars standing. Median km is the median odometer of the same used cars, read at the close, half a day after the median ask. The proved column sums to the same total as the day-by-day table, because both are written in one pass under one rule. The cut column does not: cars repriced down IN THAT STATE. A car advertised in two states is in both, so this column does not sum to the market total.

What the prices in this report are

As at 2026-10-10, 99,890 live prices were quoted drive-away, 46,915 excluding government charges, and 92,321 did not say. Every median above is a median across that mix.

The corpus behind these figures

Spotlot monitored 234,336 listings on 2026-10-05 and 238,334 on 2026-10-10 (160,426 physical cars after syndication). listings monitored by Spotlot, which grows with coverage; not a count of the Australian market.

What this report withholds, and why

  • new to market: first seen during a coverage ramp is discovery, not listing; withheld until coverage stabilises
  • median ask movement: a median over a sample whose size moves with coverage measures composition; withheld until a week's n holds still
